You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
This passage is so powerful and encouraging because Jesus' words are addressed to a great crowd. He is telling them that each one of them, no matter their background, reputation, wealth or knowledge, that they are the salt of the earth and light of the world. I love this application to our work as missionaries, because it implies that each one of our lives are significant and meaningful and that Jesus can do a work in us and through us that changes the world around us.
We said that salt and light have three purposes:
salt seasons -- salt preserves -- light shows the way
And we applied those purposes to the season of ministry that Nativity Missions is currently in. We want to season the world by living out an exciting faith as passionate missionaries, fully embracing the work that is before us and acting in bold ways to mobilize our community. We want to preserve the world by prioritizing personal prayer and Bible reading, acknowledging that Christ first has to do a work in us before he does any work through us. And we want to show the way by investing in the next level of leadership and inviting more people to get involved, strengthening our core and gaining momentum as a tribe.
Which does your team need to focus on most right now?
What are your thoughts on how we can better execute these purposes?
